Additional Recording Fee for Deeds of Trusts and Mortgages:
Section 9.7 of the 2008 Appropriations Act increased the fee for filing a deed of trust or mortgage from $12.00 to $22.00
for the first page, plus $2.00 verification fee for proof of acknowledgment which then equals a total of $24.00 for the
first page and $3.00 for each page there after.  This fee applies to deeds of trusts or mortgages registered on or after
October 1, 2008 regardless of the date on which the instrument was executed or acknowledged.  The statute makes no
Distinction on whether a deed of trust or mortgage was previously recorded so the additional fee applies to re-recorded
Deeds of trusts or mortgages.  The additional $10.00 collected by the register must be forwarded to the county Finance
Officer, who in turn forwards it to the Department of Crime Control and Public Safety to be credited to the Floodplain
Mapping Fund.  None of the $10.00 is retained by the county or the register of deeds.

EFFECTIVE OCTOBER 1, 2009

Additional Recording Fee for Deeds of Trusts and Mortgages:
G.S. 161-10(a)(1a) has been amended increasing the fee for filing a deed of trust or mortgage by $6.00 from $22.00 to $28.00 for
the first page, plus $2.00 verification fee for proof of acknowledgment which then equals a total of $30.00 for the first page plus
$3.00 for each additional page
or fraction thereof. This fee applies to deeds of trust or mortgages registered on or after
OCTOBER 1, 2009 regardless of the date on which the instrument was executed or acknowledged. The statute makes no distinction
on whether a deed of trust or mortgage was previously recorded so the additional fee applies to re-recorded deeds of trust
or mortgages.
Effective October 1, 2009 G.S. 161-11.5 has been added and requires that $5.00 of each fee collected by the register of deeds for
registering or filing a deed of trust or mortgage pursuant to G.S. 161-10(a)(1a) shall be remitted to the State Treasurer to be
credited to the General Fund as nontax revenue.
